はじめまして、きむです。どおぞよろしく!Depending on what time of day it is, おはよう、こんにちは、こんばんは and welcome to my blog. In my very first entry I will be explaining why I chose to study Japanese. I actually studied Japanese in high school but for various reasons I was not able to learn very much. My teacher was often sick, and my class had a substitute for long periods of time. She was also not a proper Japanese instructor, but was originally an English teacher. Most of the time our class only learned vocabulary or watched Japanese movies. Because of this, my Japanese education was poor. I am motivated to study Japanese at Notre Dame so that I can have a more complete Japanese education. I would like to eventually master the language. I also enjoy Japanese animated movies, such as Miyazaki movies and Japanese animated shows. I grew up watching Dragon Ball and Pokemon and occasionally watch some shows from time to time. Thank you for reading my first blog entry. じゃあまた!

  1. Hi! Sorry you had to go through the frustration of having a teacher like that; stuff like that happened a lot for me, too-- it was super annoying. I like watching anime too, so maybe we can share recommendations! :D

  2. I'm glad your experience with your previous teacher didn't deter you from continuing with Japanese! I hope you have a better experience here than at your high school. And which Miyazaki movie is your favorite? I've only seen a few, but I've liked the ones I've watched!

  4. It's a bummer that you did not have a more qualified Japanese instructor in high school. I am pretty confident that you will have a much better experience at Notre Dame. The professors at ND will definitely lead you to mastering the language. I was also a big fan of Dragonball and Pokemon growing up!

  5. I never really thought about it, but watching Japanese television shows and movies is probably a great way to build up your listening skills and Japanese vocabulary. Although you did not have a great teacher in high school, for which I am sorry, I hope that you can continue to keep up your strong motivation to study Japanese.

  7. Personally, the only Japanese films that I have been exposed to are Hayao Miyazaki films, which I absolutely love. It's been a few years since I've seen one, but from what I remember about them from my childhood, they were fantastic. You're totally right--watching Japanese TV shows and/or movies could probably be very beneficial for Japanese language development. It's good to see that even after your not-so-great Japanese experience in high school you decided to try it out again in college.
